RHS will host guided walking tours
of historic Romeo neighborhoods and the downtown area on each of the four
Thursday evenings in September.

Sept 1 Tour Guide Richard Beringer, RHS Museum Curator. Join Richard Beringer as
he takes you on a tour of Church Street. Meet Abolitionist, Robert McKay and
discover the social ways of the people. Learn about the Greek Revival
Architecture, a style that's widely seen throughout Romeo and the state, and the
economic influences that lead to these magnificent homes. Then see the interior
of a Greek Revival home.

Sept 8 Tour Guide Richard Beringer, RHS Museum Curator. Tour of a historic Romeo neighborhood. Meet Theron Miller carriage maker. This walk will take you past a number of carriage maker’s homes and their shops. Hear about the Detroit Auto Vehicle Company in Romeo. Learn about
the Perry Auto Exchange
and
see where Henry Ford cast all of the 23,000 Model T engines for his car that put Americans on wheels. This walk is about 2 miles, so wear comfortable walking shoes.

Sept 15 Tour Guide Richard Beringer, RHS Museum Curator. Tour of a historic Romeo neighborhood. Meet Harvey Mellon, a wealthy investor and lumber speculator. You will walk along North Main Street. Learn about educators, farmers, doctors and businessmen who built fine Queen
Anne, Gothic Revival
and
Italianate homes. What was Elizabeth Cady Stanton doing in town? How was William Austin Burt of Shelby Township involved? See the inside of one of these businesses of the past.

Sept 22 Tour Guide Richard Beringer, RHS Museum Curator. Tour of downtown Romeo historic sites. Meet Cortez Fessenden, U.S. Surveyor General. Romeo’s business district was surveyed into 16 quarter blocks. Romeo’s businesses have progressed from false-fronted wooden structures
to fine brick
structures.
Find out what types of buildings were there before the current ones were built. Where was the Perry House Hotel? Where was the Bradley Cigar Factory? See photos and drawings of these earlier buildings.

Tours are $5.00 a person, $3.00 for
seniors over 65 years, children under 12 and RHS members.
Tours start promptly at 7:00pm, lasting about one hour and start at
the Romeo Arts and Archives Museum at 290 North Main, parking available.
Dress for cool weather, wear
comfortable walking shoes. Heavy rain may cancel the tour.
ThThe tours are given by Richard Beringer, retired
school teacher and current curator of the Romeo Historical Society museums.
Information for the tours has been collected over 25 years with the help of his
students, local historian Richard Daugherty’s research and Editor Melvin Bleich’s Romeo Observer newspaper issues.
